every time i visit my family in northwest washington, they take me on trips throughout the area to explore a part of the country i’ve not spent much time. on our way to mt. st. helen’s national monument, we wound up a little bit lost. somewhere along the way of getting lost or finding our way out of being lost, we stopped near a bridge over a river unknown to me, where i clumsily made my way to a place to make this image.
it has always felt surreal to me - very dreamlike in a way. it’s not a particularly compelling image of an incredibly beautiful scene, and if you’ve spent much time in the pacific northwest, you’ve seen similar scenes again, and again, and again, and again. however, i typically make photos that do one of two things: represent something other than the landscape scene the viewer is experiencing, or attempt to re-create the feeling i had when enveloped in the scene. this is, obviously, an attempt at the latter.
