it’s not often one gets to be in the presence of living beings 1,000 years old. but that’s how old these bristlecone pine are, residing at treeline on a colorado mountain. they’ve bent over the years in the wind, their branches tending to survive only on the leeward side of the strong winds at this altitude. bristlecone pines are the oldest individual (the root system of a communal group of aspen trees is older while the individual trees live to be 150 years or so) living items on earth, and yet these are young. the version we have in colorado (and east of the green/colorado rivers) live to two to three thousand years, while those west of the green and colorado live up to five or even six thousand years.

i wanted to photograph these trees with film as i believed the aesthetic of film would provide a better, more timeless and deserving look for these beautiful trees.
